Fit is everything. No matter how beautiful the fabric or how bold the design, if the fit is off—it shows. That’s why, at Articles of Style, we start every garment with precision. And when it comes to suits, the details make the difference.
Meet Jay Patel, a long-time client and Florida-based criminal defense attorney. Jay’s custom pieces offer a great opportunity to walk through exactly what makes a jacket fit—and why it matters.
What to Look For
✔ The Collar – It should hug the neck with no roll or gap. This sets the tone for the entire jacket.
✔ Lapels & Button Placement – For Jay, we go with a one-button jacket and drop the button point slightly. This creates longer lapels and visually lengthens the torso—especially helpful for guys under 5'8".
✔ Chest & Closure – You want a clean chest with minimal pulling. A great test: unbutton the jacket. The panels should gently touch—no yanking required.
✔ Sleeves & Shoulders – A natural shoulder slope, a smooth sleeve, and a quarter-inch of shirt cuff showing. It’s all about balance.
✔ Back & Mobility – The back should be clean—not stiff, but not wrinkled. Slight extra room at the lats allows for natural movement.
✔ Jacket Length – Your jacket should hit around the mid-crotch. In other words: like a good lawyer, it should cover your ass.
