Want to know how to dress better as a man? Sometimes improving your style isn’t about buying more clothes, it’s about knowing what not to wear.
After years of designing custom wardrobes for men of all shapes, lifestyles and professions, these are 10 of the biggest men’s style mistakes I see, and the items I’d leave out of your wardrobe.
1. Hybrid Dress Shoes
If a shoe is designed to work for everything, chances are it isn't great at anything. Instead of dress-shoe/sneaker hybrids, choose footwear designed specifically for the occasion.

2. White Belts
Outside of very specific golf looks, white belts, especially synthetic ones, rarely elevate an outfit. A quality leather belt is far more versatile.

3. Cargo Shorts
Cargo shorts have been on the men’s fashion mistakes list for years. If you want a casual short, choose a cleaner silhouette without bulky pockets.

4. Clip-On or Pre-Tied Ties
Learn to tie your own tie or bow tie. The slight asymmetry gives it character and makes the finished outfit look more natural.

5. Matching Tie and Pocket Square Sets
Your tie and pocket square should complement each other, not match exactly. Just because they're sold as a set doesn't mean they should be worn together.

6. Fake Distressed Jeans
Great clothes develop character because you actually wear them. Artificial distressing rarely looks as authentic as denim that has naturally aged over time.

7. Flip-Flops Away From the Beach
Flip-flops have a specific purpose. For everyday casual outfits, choose a proper shoe, loafer or elevated sneaker instead.

8. Super-Tight or Super-Short Pants
One of the most dated men’s trouser mistakes is wearing pants excessively tight or cropped high above the ankle. Properly proportioned trousers create a cleaner, more timeless silhouette.
9. The Wrong Sunglasses
The wrong sunglasses can undermine an otherwise great outfit. Choose frames that complement both your face shape and personal style.

10. Oversized Luxury Logos
Good style doesn't require advertising the label on your chest. Focus on fit, fabric, proportion and quality rather than conspicuous designer logos.
