This weekend I met with a gentleman from the DC area who dresses very casually but loves suits and tailoring - and wants to introduce some sartorial style to his wardrobe.
When you’re first starting to add some sartorial flavor to your wardrobe, it’s important to start slow and focus on casual-leaning tailored items that are built for versatility - and you can get a lot out of.
Rather than jumping from sweatpants straight into three-piece suits, start with some some soft, textured tailoring that can easily be dressed-down, split into separates and paired with some of the casual items you might already own.
Below are some ideas I shared with this gentleman - perhaps they will be helpful for you as well.
Also check out our guide: How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe, as a great reference.
Start with a Casual Navy Suit (that can be split-up into a seperate jacket & pants)
Add 2-3 Shirts (that can be worn with the suit - or separate jacket and trouser)
Add 2-3 Casual Trousers (that work with the suit jacket and shirts)
Add a Neutral Polo Shirt (that works with the suit/jacket and trousers)
Add a Neutral Sweater (that works with the suit/jacket, shirts, polo and trousers)
Add a Coat that works over everything
By combining 5-10 of these items you should have A LOT of different outfit combinations - for virtually any occasion.
