“Nothing Like a Sharp Suit”

Use the comments section below to tell us which is your favorite outfit, and why!

“Recently got some inspiration from Dan’s mismatched vest post. I think it turned out pretty nice.

I also got these tiny little French-looking glasses. What do you guys think? Do they work?”

“On my way to shoot an upcoming feature at the Zegna headquarters here in NYC, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to wear one of my favorite suits.

And of course, you know I had to wear at least once thrifted item. I recently found this Barbour scarf at the vintage store that I visit everyday – you’d be surprised what you can find in the accessory section, just have some patience.”

Moleskin topcoat by Banana Republic. Windowpane suit and pale pink shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Vintage scarf by Barbour. Captoe oxfords by Johnston & Murphy.

“I’m all about the deep v-neck when it comes to thin sweaters, like this beautiful graphic print by Alexander McQueen (my favorite designer of all time, RIP).

Paired it with a power collar from my boy Angel Bespoke, a micro-houndstooth silk-blend suit from MAB, and some amazing hand-engraved ‘mad scientist shades by Matsuda Eyewear.”

Subtle pattern mixing with a narrow pinstripe suit, micro-check shirt (love the cutaway collar) and ribbed-stripe tie.”

Wow, everyone beat Dan on this one. Towni looks sharp. Dan looks like an aging hipster with a gin habit.

  • Bobby P

    Alex has upped his game

    • http://undefined Dick Lickerson

I agree Alex and Wes win this one. Towni’s sunglasses make him look like Little Face from ‘Dick Tracy’.

  • Andres

Dan’s fascination with the 70’s look is a bit repetitive and obnoxious.

  • Shotcaller

Townsend’s tie has a pattern that is roughly on the same small scale as the checks in his shirt. Flusser would get flustered at this. The outfit is a touch too monotone, everything kind of blends into each other.

Alex’s three-piece suit sans tie would work better if his suit was made to look more casual. That can be achieved several ways, one of which is to have a top-stitch like on Dan’s suit jacket. The flat blue texture of Alex’s jacket is also a bit too straight-laced to pull off the three-piece without a tie.

Westley’s scarf is fighting for attention with the bold pattern of his suit. Love the popped collar on the jacket though.

Dan gets my vote. The texture of the jacket mixes well with the print sweater, and the peak lapels’ slight formality is offset by the top-stitch, the sweater, and the texture of the cloth. The white in the sweater pulls everything together.

  • MS

Gotta be Alex, lookin’ like he’s in a Goddamn Goddard movie. He needs a revolver and a cup of coffee and saucer.

  • dwdjohnson

Dan, a deep V and mad scientist shades? Perfect combo.

  • LouCaves

First off, everyone looks really good.

I have to go with Alex because of his transformation. It wasn’t bad before but he’s been stepping out in a new direction which can’t be easy (easier when you have access to Dan’s closet..LOL!).

    Thanks, TSB.

  • Joe

Wes get’s my vote this time. Classic and well put together. Just edged out Towni by a coat. Alex, the glasses are weird and don’t work, but the rest is fly. Dan, that sweater is avant garde, on the edge, pushing boundaries, Quetzalcoatl-esque, and therefore likely to turn some people off, I’m one of those people.

P.S. Glad people are voting in the comments, interesting discussion this way.

  • http://undefined Shane

    Alex nailed it!!!

  • Brian

I think I’d go with Towni, just because he looks so classic. Still wanna slap 15 pounds on that boy and watch him terminate women like the Death Star does docile planets but whatever. Dude is balling.

Dan, can you discuss when to wear a belt?

Wes, judging by the pics, dude I think you live in my complex. Are you a PCSVT gangsta? I wasn’t feeling the 3-pattern mix on the tie/scarf/suit (solid scarf maybe better?) but what the hell do I know.

    • http://www.tsbmen.com Westley Dimagiba

Grew up in Stuyvesant Town bro.

      • Brian

Ha. I knew we were brothers, different parents and ethnicities notwithstanding.

If you ever need a wingman/collection agent, hit me up.

        • http://www.tsbmen.com Westley Dimagiba

          lol email me dude wes@tsbmen.com

          • Alex

Wes, where do you go thrifting in NYC? Please, advise…

  • Steve

Wes always looks fresh and so well put together, he gets my vote.

  • http://undefined Nate

Tough one today – good to see how suits can be worn in so many different ways.

Have to give it to Wes today though, AGAIN. The Thrift King is just killing it recently. It was the pattern mixing that tipped it today. Strong.

Great shoes from all today btw.

  • Owen

Wes with the perfect autumn (fall) look. Amazing variety of materials and patterns and they all work perfectly.

Towni nearly had it though. He normally looks so gentle and friendly, but today he looks like a mean motherf***er! Love it!

  • Alex

Goin’ with Wes on this one.

Btw, seems like someone’s been missing lately from these WIWT posts.

  • J

Alex is blowing me away with his hotness.

  • Herbert Morrison

I gotta give it 2 the big brother Wes today for the simple fact that u managed to fit that size s topcoat as gracefully as possible over your suit. I have the exact same coat from BR from almost 10-11 years ago size M and I can only get it over a slim layer not even a soft jacket. Ur a tank bro. Dan I see you big tings a gwaan.

  • Rich

  • Mondo Moda

    Those Bally loafers though!!!

  • Eugene L.

Dan, that sweater is great! But I gotta vote for Wes this time, the suit/scarf/topcoat got me.

  • http://sentenceaday.com Mitko Karshovski

Man Wes just killed it today, that suit is too sick and I think that the red in the scarf adds just the right amount of color pop. Dan I really want to like that sweater but if I have to be honest its just a little too deep for me, I don’t think I have the sartorial cajones to rock that.

  • Marcus

You guys are killing it today! Definitely one of my favorite WIWT posts for everyone, but I gotta give it to my boy Alex. I’ll be trying that look out soon.

    Wes, where’s your tie from?

  • http://keyboardandcompass.com/ Jeff

Well, that experiment certainly worked! Although by eliminating the poll you’re also allowing those of us less decisive folk to waffle on our decisions…

I’m torn between Alex for the colour pallet and Dan for the sweater.

Sorry if this stalemate makes the victor’s bragging rights a little less fun.

  • Obie

Great looks individually. Hard to pick a winner when everyone is wearing MAB…

  • Sergio Arteaga

Wes gets my vote. The windowpane suit is just awesome. One of the reasons I went with a patterned suit this time around.

  • TimL

Wes definitely hit it out of the park today. Great look.

    Alex was a close second.

    • TimL

You guys all look great today.

Wes, that paisley pocket square looks fantastic with that suit.

  • Tom

Sorry off topic, but since you go into great detail regarding fashion, any suggestions for cologne?

  • Dub

    TOUGH ‘fits, man. Jeez.

  • Rob

Alex and Dans shades are making me want to go hunting for some non traditional frames. Love all the looks but i’m going to go with Dan for keeping us readers on our toes and sparking new ways of thinking

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Thanks Rob. ’tis what we try to do. great stuff coming up!

  • http://undefined Ishandev

Dan. The deep v almost looks like a vest when the suit jacket is buttoned, and those shades… he should win just by wearing them. Plus, I would never look at that vest and think it’s an easy color to pull off, but he just did. Those other dudes need to retire.

  • Levi G

    Everyone looks very, very good.

  • Brooks

Wes gets my vote today (mostly due to the excellent suit) with Dan in a close second. No offense, Alex and Towni, but your outfits felt a bit safe today. That’s just my opinion.

  • Kiel West

That suit adds some visual height to you somehow. Risky sunglasses, but you’re pulling them off!

    You’re the inspirraaaaatiooon.

  • Eric

Towni did y’all dirty today…straight murdered it!!

Would love to see french cuffs to complete that powerful look.

  • Drew

Towni gets my “vote” (I like having a voting tool as well as comments) for the slick Randolph Engineering shades and those excellent red loafers.

  • TO

Dan. Too much with the sweater and shades, always pulling something new.

Alex, those glasses work for you well and represent your style nicely- tasteful with a slight quirk!
Towni, nice work ‘micro’-mixing today! Cool stuff

  • John B

I’d vote for Wes, but Dan’s sweater wins the game.

  • Luke

Wes, awesome scarf and overcoat, excellent look. Alex close second, nice shades

  • Omar Shaikh

Dan. Love the McQueen knit. Another awesome McQueen piece. Just out of my price range though :(

  • cam

dan, going a little wider in the trouser leg opening? i like. now just give them babies a slight break like towni’s

  • Daniel

    Sir Westley gets my vote.

  • Miguel

All you guys look fantastic, Dan, that shirt you’re rocking is hot, my vote goes to you.

  • Arthur

I have to go with Alex. Nice shades!

  • Esosa

Jeeze, you guys really brought it today! Inspiring me and giving me some ideas! Great job gentlemen!

  • Matt

Didn’t like Dan’s look at first, but hot damn it grew on me. That sweater is too cool for school.

  • Li

I’m for Alex. Makes the most sense.

  • http://undefined Jason

Dan FTW! I Love those high collard shirts…..I need to hit up Angel Ramos!

  • kellen owenby

I have to go with Wes. Love the rugged barbour scarf with the sharp suit and tailored overcoat.

  • Todd R.

Alex looks too-cool-for-school today and takes home my vote. Very simple, with impeccable fit and I dig the quirky shades.

  • Paul Kim

I have to go with Alex.

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Paul Kim is that you?? http://tsbmen.com/5958/classic-with-a-twist-featuring-paul-kim/

      How are you brother?

      • Paul Kim

Sorry, Dan. Another Paul Kim. I’ve found that it’s a popular name for Koreans. I’ve been an avid follower of your site for some time. Thanks for sharing your vision of style with us!

  • Adam E

Tight all around, Slight edge to Wes… Solely distinguished by the shoes… I was looking at those this weekend, but they didn’t have my size in the brown (10 W), and just didn’t look as nice in the black… (and on their canadian site the price is almost $100more than what I saw in the states this weekend…

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Typical story. It’s hard out here for us Canadians.

      • Adam E

PS Was suiting up an intentional theme, or accidental…? Also, Alex’s glasses look almost steampunk-y, like stuff you’d see on Pinterest. I cyclically love them and hate them, with no middle ground (otherwise I would probably have given him the nod… but I was at a hate them point when I made my pick).

And yes, US retailers seem to have geographic prejudices. They hate us for our universal health care, maple syrup, and unleashing Justin Beiber on them, so take it out on us by gouging us on clothes and shoes. I found those shoes at 5 stores, but only J & M themselves stock widths, but didn’t have 10W (they had 9.5 and 10.5W, which were too big and too small, and the regular 10 was too narrow… I should learn to make my own shoes one of these days and solve that problem for myself)

  • Jakob

Dan. Almost Wes, but that sweater is killer. Is it made from silk?

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

      Silk/Cotton. Great eye Jakob!

  • Ali Naaseh

    Townie gets it this time.

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Sticking with the classic, eh Ali?

  • josh

awh no voting today? Dan’s look is so future and villainous. Mainly cause of the sweater and shades. It’s my favourite.

However, it’s awesome how you guys all look sinister in these suits today! haha.

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

#SinisterSuits! Just gave me a great new post idea…

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Running a test today. My theory is that voting takes away from the comments. We’d much rather here your thoughts than collect your anonymous votes…

      • josh

Yeah man, I hope you guys would too ha. You’ve come close with the all black, but perhaps focus on western, street, urban, summer, winter, black, white (just stirring the creative pot haha) That’d be dope.

Good to know and appears to be working!

  • Marshall M.

Wes no doubt. That perfect suit with the cuff and the sorta matching scarf. Then that topcoat. Killed that

  • http://undefined Jeanscuffed

MAN! I saw Wes and was like his suit is MONEY….but THEN Dan’s pic popped up and that sweater jumped at me. It’s going to be really hard to pick out of Wes and Dan, but I’m going to go with Wes because of the full suit and thrifted scarf. GREAT OOTD guys
