ASK DAN: Fragrances, Kids Section, Last Minute Gifts

Fragrance Notes

Q: Hi Dan. Do you have any advice on choosing a men’s fragrance? I’m new to the world of perfumes and would like something fresh but not intense. Thanks!

A: How you smell is a very personal decision, so I would start by taking a close look at your wardrobe and try to image what the ideal scent would be to represent your style. For example if you wear a lot of vintage tweed and broken-in workwear, go with something reflecting woods, leathers and natural masculine flavors. If you have a significant other in your life, it’s also probably a good idea to get their opinion on this topic, since they will be the one smelling you most often. Lastly, as you explore this new olfactory side of your style, don’t forget about your breath. I’m always surprised at how many well-dressed guys are spitting hot flames. Why do you think that old guy always has a stick of gum for you? He’s been keeping it grown and sexy for 60+ years. We can learn a lot from older gents when it comes to preparing for success.

Shopping the Kids Section

Q: I have a very small frame and boys clothes tend to fit me better, but I feel embarrassed shopping in the children’s department. Can/should a grown man wear clothes meant for children?

A: If you can find clothes that fit better (requiring fewer alterations) and are generally cheaper, then why not? Sounds like a win-win to me. The quality won’t be quite the same, but it will still look better than trying to re-cut men’s clothes to fit your boyish frame. I would consider shopping online to save yourself the embarrassment. Or just tell people that your shopping for your little nephew… Tis the season, after all.

Last Minute Gift Ideas

Q: Dan, quick, I have a couple days left to buy something for my very stylish brothers who are notoriously hard to buy for. They are both big fans of your site, so I thought I’d ask the man himself!

A: Ah, good ‘ol last minute Christmas shopping. Off the top of my head I would go with 1) one of these menswear books 2) a pair of quality cedar shoe trees (in their appropriate size) or 3) an annual membership to a men’s salon for unlimited haircuts and beard trims… Better yet, perhaps our readers can also make suggestions in the comments below…. Of course, we could always do an AOS gift card to hook them up with some custom tailoring :) Good luck and Happy Holidays!

The Style Guide

Q: Is the Style Guide coming back?

I like my cologne like I like my liquor in the seasons. Brown in the fall/winter and clear in the spring/summer.

    • LarsBrown.

Agreed. I make a concious decision to wear a different scent for different seasons. Wood/honey/leather in the autumn/winter and citrus/floral in the spring/summer.

        Recommendations for spring/summer?

        • LarsBrown.

I’m an avid fan of Floris aftershave. Very traditional London brand. I wear ‘JF’ or ‘Cefiro’ in the Spring/Summer season.
