The Capsule Wardrobe: Day to Night

May 28th, 2015

Here at Articles of Style, we don’t want you to buy more clothes. We want you to buy the right clothes, so you can wear them comfortably and not have to replace them every year. A smart wardrobe is one that is built around versatility and longevity. Ideally, the majority of the pieces can be mixed-and-matched to create different outfits for different occasions.

To illustrate this point, here’s the second installment in our “Capsule Wardrobe” series, where we give an example of a smart wardrobe built around, what else, a tailored suit in a seasonal fabric.

The 10 Pieces

mensstylecapsule (1 of 5)

Fully suited for a day at the office, or an evening event. Perfect for those “Semi Formal” occasions.

mensstylecapsule (4 of 5)

Lose the suit jacket and switch to a linen shirt with a more casual pattern for a “business casual” take on the look.

mensstylecapsule (2 of 5)

Break up the suit with jeans and layer the neutral crewneck sweater for a smart in-between look, perfect for date night.

mensstylecapsule (3 of 5)

Dress down the suit with a scoop neckline and some minimal low-top sneakers for a little weekend tailoring.

Go full casual with the topcoat, sweater, jeans and sneakers for an easy-going (but still smart and tailored) Sunday afternoon.

I hope this gets you thinking about adding some versatility into your wardrobe and getting the best bang for your buck by investing in quality menswear that you can rely on.

Thanks, as always, for reading.

Yours in style,

Dan Trepanier

Hopsack suit looks fab. Where can I find that hopsack fabric?

  • Tadyrall Jarrett

This series is awesome, but are the sweaters appropriate for the summer months?

  • Bateman

Great article. Love this series. Less really is more.

  • Trillionaire

Dan, can you do one with a black suit?

    • Dan Trepanier

Yessir. Coming up soon. Thanks for reading.

I know I always do this, but if you wear a suit all day it really needs to spend at least the next 24 hours hanging up and getting some air. The shoes need similar treatment. However a pair of well chosen chinos (pale brown, maybe grey or stone) and a pair of black loafers would help stretch this out a lot.

The banker shirt isn’t really pulling its weight here. White collar (less extreme cutaway ideally) but standard colour barrel cuffs would be a more versatile option – I have one from Austin Reed which could be worn with the jeans.

This is perfect. We try and look at our wordrobe like this everyday. It’s amazing how many outfits can be made with 1 suit and a few other pieces. Please post more of these with a new suit!

What brand is the gray crew neck looking for a cool lightweight crew

    • tommyjohn_45

Sunspel (in the photo)…. If you’re looking for a more budget friendly version, J Crew, Uniqlo, Frank & Oak and Club Monaco often have good options.

      Here’s on on sale –

Thank guys not sure if that is Sunpel in the photo I think Dan may have bought this one back from the archives. The collar seems a bit looser and the color is darker. Sunpel’s version looks more fitted to me. Tommy I went ahead an grabbed the J Crew one that is on sale. It’s seasonless and has the polish of a sweater. Cheers!

Good stuff.. let us know how it fits!

Muji has a great linen one

      • Antwan Davis

Muji’s is cool I like the neckline

    • Dan Trepanier

That’s an old school piece I scored at a sample sale years ago…

  • Danilo

This is so cool! What to do on thursday and saturday?

    • AdamE

      • Dan Trepanier

Haha. There’s prob two more outfits in there somewhere…

        • AdamE

          It’s probably a t-shirt or Henley short of hitting 7 outfits…

And while I see the concerns below about allowing the suit to air out, realistically, very few people will use a “capsule” like this to dress themselves for a week (save for maybe on a business trip with a small carry-on), but what these posts are amazing for is giving ideas/inspiration for re-thinking the pieces in our closets, to get more mileage out of them, rather than simply using them in the same one way, all of the time… It’s a great lesson for guys who are leaning towards the buy less, buy better mantra, or people on a budget with limited pieces in their closet…

And that Black top coat is killer! There’s your Saturday outfit.. black top coat, straight up… flasher style…
