1 Piece/3 Ways: The Glenplaid Topcoat

January 30th, 2015

You know we love a classic 3/4 length tailored topcoat. A good one is timeless, gentlemanly, and super versatile. This grey cashmere version with subtle red glenplaid, that we found in the Shockoe Atelier both the Liberty Fairs NYC menswear show, is a fantastic example of an outerwear piece that can boost an entire wardrobe.

Here are three of the hundreds of ways you could wear it.

    1. All Business

A trim grey topcoat with a subtle texture is perfect to throw over a business suit. One like this works, with just a subtle touch of color, is still neutral enough to work with just about any suit color.

For a detailed breakdown of how it should fit, check out our overcoat tailoring guide.

    2. Casual Weekend

Throw it over a simple chunky sweater, like this oversized cream knit, with a pair of washed jeans and a sharp boot, and you have an instant smart casual look.

Perfect for dates, drinks, strolls, lunches, brunches…just about anything non-formal, really.

    3. Traveling Light

This is exactly where I like to see Wes; the smooth operator.

I love a thin dark turtleneck but what makes this look, for me, is the creased and cuffed denim. That’s some next-level styling. It’s the little things that show good taste.

I’m digging the glenplaid! The tough part of picking out a topcoat is finding one that’s sophisticated, versatile, but also different from your suit and trouser material. Well done!

      Look 3. Oh my!

Yes, thank you so much for bringing Wes back in front of the camera. Three outstanding looks, best ones being first and third!

The denim makes a case for tailored jeans.

I cannot get behind the coat-as-cape look in #2. Some dude did it as recently as two posts ago, and it drove me crazy there as well. There’s something about it that’s very pretentious, like tying the sleeves of a sweater around one’s neck. And it’s not even practical. It doesn’t sit well. Please let’s not do this. If you want a cape, buy a cape and tie it around your neck.

        c’mon man, I already have a cape.

Didn’t notice that last pair of trousers was denim until that very last shot. That truly is subtle detail! Never thought they would work, but I guess you learn something new every day!

The overcoat is great, although a bit loud, so I think the least contrast, the better it looks (look 1 and 3.)

Classic Wes style all throughout, love it!

Always good to see Wes back in front of the lens. That cableknit sweater looks like the perfect go-to for this recent northeast weather we’ve been getting!

Though I love the black wool 3/4 topcoat I own, this would be a beauty to have. Subtle enough but elevates and adds interest to every outfit. These look like some amazing brands featured (I’m guessing you discovered them at the Liberty Fairs show-??) That is the most beautiful cable knit sweater I have ever seen. Lastly, Wes is all about the woven shoes! He owns so many..

Wes, you’re starting to break the seams of your clothes. Quit the roids lol
*kidding….sorta* Great fits guys, that sweater looks luxe!
