Articles of Style: 2014 Year in Review

December 31st, 2014

2014 was a busy year for Articles of Style. It was a year marked by change. We completed our new studio in Los Angeles, brought in a new team of intellectual studs, re-branded, developed a new website, brought back the Style Guide, shifted directions behind-the-scenes, and finally started production of our own clothing line (dropping in 2015, more on that later).

As I look back on this year I am so very thankful and grateful for all of the people who have helped make it happen. Alex Crawford for his continued faith and dedication, Pat Foley and Will Howe for helping us iron out our business strategies, Wes Dimagiba for holding it down in NYC, Karyn Bailey for her brilliant ideas and continued support, my family for their never-ending encouragement, all of the brands and advertisers we worked with, all of the incredible people we’ve partnered with and featured, and of course, our loyal readers & commenters who allow us to make it all happen; guys like Tim O’Hearn, Cam Rush, Christian McDuffy, Miguel Martinez, JoefromTexas…you know who you are, and we appreciate each of you.

2015 is sure to be another eventful year full of change as we launch e-commerce and get into video production. But before we get ahead of ourselves, I thought we’d take a look back at some of our highlights from the past year. Here are some of our favorite editorials, profiles, and style guides from 2014.

I’m sorry everyone, ima let ya’ll finish, but I believe MY feature was the best of all time *shrugs and drops mic* (had to be the one to do it lol, of course I’m kidding). Dan, you and your team have CONSISTENTLY put out great content! I mean where else can I get this kind of content this good for FREE!! I swear it’s better than GQ and I pay for that lol. Ya’ll have a genius idea and a great support team and I can’t wait to see what happens in 2015. In the world of trends and fads, you made it ok for me to see past what in “now” and focus on things that will last the test of time. You make menswear comfortable (even with the controversy here and there). Videos and e-commerce??? Shit, bring it on!!

    • Dan Trepanier

JEANSCUFFED, thank you for the continued support, feedback and encouragement. 2015 is going to be a HUGE one for AOS (we might finally take on capital investment, which will allow us to take this to a whole new level) and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve really been working on… You’ll have to convince Karyn about the documentation haha…she likes to operate under the radar like a ninja warrior. Cheers brother.

Thanks Article of Style team for another great year in the books that was 2014! I am truly honored to be included in a shout out in the above pages!!

This website has been the base source behind every compliment I have received on dressing for the past five years and the inspiration for the humble wardrobe I have started to build in that time.

While I thoroughly enjoyed all of the articles listed above, I would say that my favorite article of 2014 was the piece on the history of Dan’s leather jacket. That article tied together clothing and lifestyle for me in a very memorable way. Stories like that create excitement for me that clothes can be trans-formative in a way in a person’s life.

Look forward to all that is coming in 2015!!

Happy New Year to all of you guys, and congratulations on all of the achievements you guys have conquered in 2014!

I have been a reader for a long time, and throughout all this time, this website has always delivered what I was seeking.

My style has grown alongside the evolution of TSB/AoS, and so from tips on how to wear a denim jacket (which is how I found the old blog), I came looking for creative ways to wear my newly-acquired suits, or an insightful look at the history of clothing, never being disappointed, and being inspired to the point of starting my own blog (which is still a work in progress, but will be up and ready in 2015.)

Once again, thanks for keeping it genuine and original, and all the best for the new year!

  • Sergio Arteaga

Dan, just wanted to say thank you for helping me re-invent my wardrobe, which started a couple of years back. This continues to be my regularly visited website that provides continuous style inspiration. Because of TSB/AoS I’ve been able to connect with people who I know consider good friends. From guys I met on other boards and are now good friends to the homie Wes.

Not to mention the major wardrobe improvements that have come along with this. I went from owning 3 ill-fitting suits before my first visit to TSB, prior to my first visit at MAB to about 4 bespoke suits and 2 samples from MAB and a handful of MTM suits. It may be clothing but it definitely helped me become a better me and a more confident me. Thank you for that.

  • Geoff

Great content here.. all around!! The site has really taken huge step and I anticipate big things in the near future! Keep up the good work homie!!! Happy New Year…

  • tommyjohn_45

To narrow down my favorite pieces from 2014 down to a list would be impossible. I just want to thank you for the guidance that has helped transform my wardrobe, sense of style and confidence. Ask is which has made 2014 a huge success personally. All the best in 2015!

    • Dan Trepanier

Thanks TommyJohn! You should have been on that list too. Big things coming in 2015 – Happy New Year!

  • cam

it amazes me how much awesome fucking content you guys continue to produce without seeming stale. i like that you made sure to include karyn ((happy (soon to be wife) happy life ;))….just kidding though, her piece was awesome.

here’s to a Happy and Safe 2015!! keep up the hustle

    • Dan Trepanier

Karyn is everything. Thanks for your continued support Cam! Things are really going to start coming together in 2015, and I hope we can make you a part of it. More on that soon, of course. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  • Brent

    I miss townie.

    • Brooks

I was gonna say, without getting too deep into things, would you be willing to speak to Towni’s absence? Is he just moving in another direction?

I mean, I know that his fits might’ve been the most “controversial”, but I thought he (as well as the equally disappeared John Crossley and his amazing WIWTs) brought just as much to the team as the rest of you, and I’m sad to not see him around.

      • Chad

They have touched on it already, Townie has moved onto another job that his work with TSB helped him achieve.

        • Dan Trepanier

Thanks Chad. Things are changing around here, but it’s all going to make sense soon :)

      • Dan Trepanier

With our move to LA we had to make some staff changes. Towni moved on to another gig, working briefly with our friends at Michael Andrews Bespoke. We’re also retooling our video content with production on the West coast, hence the Crosley disappearance. Happy New Year Brooks!

        • Brooks

Happy 2015 to you and the entire AoS team, Dan! Here’s hoping for another year of success, growth, and snappy dressing. Excelsior!

          • Dan Trepanier

            Thanks Brooks!

Hit him up on Instagram! Show some New Years love

  • JoeFromTexas

Appreciate the shot out gentlemen. I stumbled upon the site years ago googling pointers on picking out an interview suit. But I’ve stayed for the insightful articles and sense of camaraderie in the comments section. I remember coming back over and over after finding the site and meandering through the “you might also like” links until I read it all. That initial google search happened to coincide with a move to NYC and a substantial weight loss (~80 pounds) which required a wardrobe rebuilding (and thank goodness for this site). The website, along with the weight loss and move to the big city really did wonders for my confidence. I’ve been thankful ever since.

I’ve enjoyed following the transformation and cant wait to see what comes next. Best of luck to yall in the new year.

    • Dan Trepanier

We love to hear stories like that!! Thanks again JoeFromTexasNowLivingInNewYork! HAPPY NEW YEAR

      • JoeFromTexas

It’s actually JoeFromTexasWhoLivedInNewYork. I’m back in my home country of Texas. The NYC gig was a two year position. Loved it, and this site definitely helped that. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YALL!
