Fall Color Ideas: Browns & Greens

September 9th, 2014

The team and I have been busy in NYC with meetings and fashion week events, so today I’m starting a quick series on color palettes.

As the seasons change, so should the colors, fabrics, and textures of your wardrobe. Today we highlight one of my favorite combos for Fall: browns & greens.

Here’s some looks from the Articles of Style archives to get you thinking…

What’s your favorite color combo for Fall?

Yours in style,

Gotta agree, I match burgundy and gray, brown, tan, and blue. Always deviated from green but this definitely left me craving for it.

  • Caboom

As a colour combo, I also love burgundy and grey/black. Very versatile!

    Hey Dan,

With fall coming up I’d like to pick up a puffer/quilted vest to wear under a blazer, jacket, etc. The problem is finding one well made while also being slim enough to fit under a blazer/jacket. I like suitsupply’s body warmer but at $200 it’s pretty steep for an item that won’t get tons of wear. Any ideas on some good brands to look at?

Take a cue from the leaves and toss some burnt orange into the mix. It’s one of my favorite colors for the fall and pairs nicely with the rest of the autumn palette.

Wow the turtle neck cardigan combination!

  • Luis

What is the name of the boots on the first photo? Very versatile.

    • Kyle Leon Norville

Those are Chelsea Boots I believe.

  • Joel S.

    That green suede bomber tho…

    • Kyle Leon Norville

I concur. I did not want a bomber until I seen that one.

  • Timothy J Greeley

all about blue, mustard, and burgundy for me. Muted browns, creams, and greens for less saturated ones.

Really Dan – your closet must be the size of Madison Square Garden – but the dress boots/jeans/blazer look is perfect for Fall and my favorite!
Also when are you going to post more items for sale on eBay! :)

  • Desmond

    Tasty, Dan.
Brown and green are spot on together – although I’ve found it can be more difficult than it seems to avoid looking like a tree…

  • John B

I guess I’ll be wearing something brown/green tomorrow. I also think I have to get a brown pair of pants soon.

  • Jack

The amount of clothes you have is unreal. and Awesome.

That belted shawl cardigan is fucking MONEY. I nearly pull my hair every time I look for one because I can’t find a single one anywhere :/

  • ChrisD

I’ve been on a green thing lately (it fits well contextually even in peak of summer in non-california-like places), probably inspired by this blog =P

In general Fall has me moving toward dark and/or desaturated tones of any color. A very grey-toned blue (think Seattle sky :)), reds become burgundy/wine, Yellows/whites become khaki/taupe.. etc
I’m also a huge proponent of off-white (Tee)shirts, or just very very worn-in white things from several summers of use.

Just dusted off my green tie and burgundy cardigan as the cooler air has started to roll into Boston… Personally, natural colors are my favorite, so I couldn’t be happier as fall approaches. Now I just need a tweed suit!

All great looks, of course. But I love the 2nd pic the most. I think I need some coffee now.

Damnit Dan, sell me the RL belted shawl cardigan already!!

    • Juan Zara

That cardigan may well be my favorite piece of clothing featured on this website. I’ve been looking all over for one like it since I first saw it here about three years ago, but found nothing!
Besides the off-topic: I sometimes like to mix in some burgundy pieces in my autumn attire, especially knitwear and scarves.

      • Josh

Burgundy, brown, mustard, and green are a huge portion of my fall color palette too, and that cardigan is literally perfect. I need one.

  • Miguel

This is the combo I sometimes do: Green pants, white shirt, brown or something similar tweed jacket and either suede double monks or brown cap toe shoes.

Feeling the first look. And the turtleneck/cardigan pairing too. On the former, I might swap in some faded black denim in place of the blue, but that’s me. Lookin’ sharp, TSB, as always.

Side note: great blog. I’ve enjoyed your recent posts. Keep going!

Awesome combo. I got a lightweight green cotton cardigan last fall and wore from fall to the end of spring with my brown suede wingtips in SoCal.
