WIWT: Going Out in Style

March 20th, 2014

Articles of Style rule #1: Always bring your ‘A’ game.

Use the poll at the end of the post to vote for your favorite outfit, and tell us why in the comments!

    1. Dan

Speaking of cheap suits, this is the one that I was talking about. White linen blend  that I picked up for less than $100 on clearance at Macys.

I took it to Franklin and now it’s perfect for summer cocktail parties, beach weddings, or just when you’re feeling extra tropical. Sometimes I wear stuff like this on a sunny day just because it’s fun. People love it, especially in LA where suits are very seldom seen – especially tailored ones in seasonal fabrics.

Going linen-on-linen is one of my go-to moves out here, when it’s 85 and sunny in March. Spring/Summer fabrics year round.

I’m not usually one for casual loafers with chunky soles, but that’s two in a row from the good folks at Amsterdam Shoe Co.

They’re just so comfortable and work well with the casual nature of the West coast.

    2. Wes

Around Christmas I decided to treat myself to a Schott Perfecto that I’ve been eyeing for the longest time. Naturally, I found this one at the high-end vintage boutique I frequent by my apartment, on sale! This is the type of piece that is better Vintage, because it’s stiff as a board brand new and doesn’t have any character.

Some leather motorcycle jackets can come off as too “costumey” at times, but if it fits right and you keep it simple, nothing else matters.

I’m all about the little things and the way these sleeves taper down the arm is just perfect.

Chelsea boots are a staple wardrobe item, in my opinion. After having these, though, I would like to find another pair with a less rounded toe box. #firstworldproblems

    3. Alex

“Inspired by Wes’ buttoned collar look from last week, I decided to try out this super-minimal look for a meeting Dan and I had this week.”

“I really love the color combination here and I didn’t want to add or distract from it by adding a pocket square or tie. The only accessory is a single ring, I’m not even wearing a watch.”

“Went with sleek black dub-monks. Again, trying to keep it as simple as possible.”

    Thanks, as always, for reading.

like wes’ look just cuz of the boots. And it looks like he lives in Stuy town. That place needs a sense of fashion. Bunch of sentinels there

    • Steñ

I had to vote for my boy Wes. He’s always consistently killing it, I do support Dans fit though “Drug Dealer chic, all white like I got the whole thing bleached”

    • Owen

Dan looks great, Wes looks like Shia Lebeouf, and sorry Alex but no tie makes you look like you couldn’t be bothered. If you can’t find a tie or ps to work with your suit/shirt combo (blue and purple are strong colors so it’s not surprising) why not dress it down? Wear sneakers or chukkas and open a couple of buttons maybe. I’ve never understood buttoning a shirt all the way up without a tie. It just leaves this big empty space that isn’t very flattering, and it’s less comfortable.

you just won me major points btw, good looks.

    • Matt

Dude, Alex, you killed it so hard here. Casually simple, but bold. Love it.

    • Mike W.

Style Guide still seems to be busted, just FYI.

    • Al Bizzy

Everyone really came widdit today, but I’m ridin for Team Wes. Anytime a Pinoy can look like a badass, it helps us all out. Haha!

      • http://www.tsbmen.com/ Westley Dimagiba

        they love us.

    • Daniel Moretz

I have to go with Dan on this one. You killed it brother! The vintage linen shirt in that color with a white suit was a great choice for Spring/Summer. Where those vintage shades too?

    • E

Love those Just a men shoes! Put in an order for a pair for myself.

    • Jon

The award for most dressed like a costume goes to outfit 1, 2, and 3

      • http://www.tsbmen.com/ Westley Dimagiba

I see what you did there.

      • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

These are not costumes brother. This is real life. We’re just living. Don’t be upset.

        • Al Bizzy

          You MaaaAAAD! LoL

    • cuponoodles

Why do all the NY bros go with the Macklemore haircut?

      • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

        You mean Macklemore and Wes?

      • Martha Estrada

wut? Wes be looking real good in here… he’s got the bad boy look on lock

    • Malcolm

All good outfits, but I’m definitely rooting for Alex. As a California native, there is a certain element of luxury/casual that I think Alex nails on the head. It’s not flashy, but he still looks like he runs a third-generation winery on the Silverado Trail. After that, Dan’s outfit is pretty stellar

      • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

        Got that #3rdgenerationwinery swag

    • Ike S

Wes-What vintage stores do you shop at in NY?

      • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

Wes’ philosophy on sharing vintage stores: Loose lips sink ships.

    • Massimo

I like Dan’s color scheme. That green shirt is sweet. I do not like Wes’ white oxford with that leather jacket. It’s got to be a t shirt with that leather imo. Alex continues to confound me…that shirt always looks cheap, and a terrible pairing with the suit. I also am not a fan of blue suit/black shoe combo.

    • Sergio Arteaga

I don’t like leather jackets at all but Wes pulls it off flawlessly with the white shirt, black denim and black chelsea’s…not to mention the new bad-ass haircut to match the outfits attitude, therefore he gets my vote.

      • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

All he needs is a vintage Triumph.

        • Shawn

Oh yeah, don’t forget the Triumph cafe racer!

          • Ishandev

maybe a Tuk Tuk? lamang biro…

    • Miguel

Dan is the winner today, first day of spring and he drops an all Linen look, win.

By the way Dan, that shirt you have on by EZ is fantastic, love the color.

      • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

Hah. Didn’t even realize it was officially the first day of Spring. It was just hot out. Damn…we gotta publish all this Winter content we’re sitting on…

        Thanks Miguel!

    • cam

Dan with the white socks and loafer combo

      • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

        Socks are actually baby pink.

    • LouCaves

I ride a motorcycle and Schotts are awesome jackets. A friend gave me one when I first started riding but, alas, it was too small. I wear a grey/faded black one now (it used to be pitch black); thing feels like it’s 10lbs.

Love the color of Dan’s and Alex’s pieces.

But I cant vote for one person in good conscience. You all look good.

      Three-way tie today.

      Thanks, TSB.

    • MS

Alex, Dan, any thoughts on the seam showing through the pant leg on Alex’s look? In that last photo. Something that happens with my suit pants on occasion too. Is it the pressing that’s doing it? A bad seamstress?

      • MS

Pardon me, “the STITCH showing through the pant leg…”

    • http://www.twitter.com/iPodschun Derric

Voted Dan because I’m not supporting the air tie.

    • Adam

Wes’ Jacket is pretty awesome, but I gave my vote to Dan (although as I look out at the snow/rain slush, being able to wear linen on linen makes me jealous…)… The colour of Alex’s shirt I think pops enough, but the look would have been more successful without a button down collar, a sharp point or semi-spread would have worked better I think when going buttoned up but tie-less.

      • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

        Love the attention to detail!

    • John B

Wes’ jacket is amazing. Had to give it to him. Ι agree with the other guys, Alex would look better with another shirt. And to be honest, he would look even better with a tie. Not really on board with the “air tie”.

      • Ishandev

I disagree. I would chose a band collar, if available, but definitely no tie! Ruins the symmetry IMO.

    • Jeanscuffed

It was either Wes or Dan for me. I agree with Shawn that Alex’s shirt could have been dressier to match the luxe look of the suit (I’m guessing it was a high/low reference maybe??). But great idea for the “air tie”. Both colors need to represent one another without the blocking of a tie.

I think I’m going to go with Wes. All black with the jet black hair??! C’mon now. I would hate to be walking somewhere dark at night and see Wes in all black sitting on a bench like that. I’d turn the other direction lol.

Dan, I’m really feeling the color combo. You can never go wrong with green, white, and brown. And as I can remember you posted your shoe collection when you 1st moved to LA. How’s that collection now? Lol, we need to see!

    • Christian

Was stuck between Wes and Alex and Wes came out on top. That black on black was too clean man.

      • Guest

Everyone came widdit today. But I’m ridin for Wes. Any time a Pinoy looks like a badass, it helps us all out. Haha!

        • Al Bizzy

    • Shawn

I love linen on linen, looks so comfortable! Unfortunately for me, without any undershirt, it would be a sweat fest, thus ruining the appeal of linen on linen. But that’s a good look, can’t believe Dan that you’ve already taken out the linens when here in good ol’ Québec, we’ve just received yet another snowfall.. Wes, that Schott vintage jacket is awesome, really dig this biker jacket! And Alex, sorry buddy, but I don’t think this particular shirt works with your awesome MAB suit, it looks too casual/not enough crisp (my opinion!)!

      • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

I find that a cotton undershirt under a linen shirt only makes me warmer…but we all sweat at different paces and have to dress accordingly.

Thanks for your comment Shawn – I hope all is well in good ‘ol Quebec!

        • Shawn

What I meant was that I can’t wear a shirt without an undershirt because it would be ruined/stained too fast. But, wearing an undershirt with a linen shirt is counterproductive, as you said. Wish I was able to wear garments without undershirts!

          • http://www.TSBmen.com/ Dan Trepanier

To each his own man. The undershirt can be a savior for sure.

    • Daniel Barea

Alex you had a good chance I only would recommend a different shirt to button the top button. I am seeing a lot guys do it but really in my lowly opinion it depends on the shirt whether or not it pops. Good job guys.

    • http://alreadyinvoiced.tumblr.com/ Adrian B

Not even a fan of black but Westley, jeez. Dope broham. You get my vote

      • http://www.tsbmen.com/ Westley Dimagiba

I know you’re wearing a black suit today.

        • http://alreadyinvoiced.tumblr.com/ Adrian B

Quit playin B. That was blackwatch.

    • JohnLeads

Voted for Dan, because i love the linen-linen-look. Colour combining is also spot on! Green and brown makes for a nice winter-to-spring transition. Ah, i forgot. There’s no Winter in L.A. at all.

    • I B on some Rock’emSock’em ish

DAN gets it this time. Alex went too minimal
