1 Piece/3 Ways: The Polo Sweater

November 29th, 2013

Since the beginning of Articles of Style I’ve always taken pride in highlighting versatile menswear pieces that we consider to be smart, long-term investments.

As the weather on the West Coast continues to cool down, I’ve been gravitating toward long-sleeved polo sweaters.

Today I’m highlighting one of my favorites; a sporty chest-stripe version by Michael Bastian (available at Saks Fifth Avenue).

Here’s three different ways to wear it.

1. Fall Polo Shirt

It has long sleeves, but it’s still a polo shirt. Feel free to wear it on the skin, perhaps under a lightweight jacket or slim topcoat.

This is a great look for traveling because it’s simple, comfortable, and has plenty of pocket room.

Leave the 3-button neckline open and don’t jumble it up with a messy t-shirt poking out.

Simplicity is key.

A camel topcoat with white jeans is a very slick combination. Here the navy sweater gives it a dark base and the brown suede boots anchor it all down.

2. Lightweight Outerwear

In transitional seasons this sweater is enough to serve as lightweight outerwear.

For the business casual crowd, consider wearing it over your shirt & tie for a sporty touch at the office.

I like to offset my casual/sporty touches with some mean business shoes. I also just love these leather/suede blocked double monks, they were my first pair of custom shoes from Scarpe di Bianco.

3. Layer in a Sweater

024

Like a v-neck or cardigan, a long-sleeved polo can serve as a smart layer over a button-down shirt and under a tailored jacket (with or without a tie).

The sporty chest stripe on this one makes it a perfect match for a donegal tweed suit and an oxford shirt – just as Mr. Bastian intended it.

Again, when in doubt go with sharp, well-made shoes. These special edition “Jefferson” wingtips in cordovan are sure to last me a very, very long time.
