Own Your Look feat. Keino Benjamin
March 13th, 2013
Keino Benjamin is a man of style.
The St. Kitts native who now lives in NYC wears many hats, literally and figuratively. He’s a celebrity stylist, a creative consultant, a personal shopper, a self proclaimed ladies man…all of which stem from his unique sense of personal style.
Keino uses subtle details and unexpected combinations to create his own unique aesthetic. More importantly, though, he stays true to himself and owns his looks with confidence…which is the best kept secret to having great style.
Here’s three examples.
1. Creative Director Suit
As a creative entrepreneur, it’s not always necessary to wear a suit, but it is important to look competent and professional.
Keino puts a spin on the classic black suit, by combining a slim black jacket with a pair of sleek, but very subtle, biker pants. They give his look a little creative edge, while keeping the undertones professional and serious. Perfect for a creative director.
His pattern-mixing and unorthodox accessories show confidence, and prove that Keino is no rookie in the style game.
2. Winter-Spring Layering
Leave it to a Caribbean native in NYC to pair a tank top with a wool overcoat.
Unexpected combinations like this are a hallmark of Keino’s style. On paper, it usually wouldn’t work, but he confidently and comfortable pulls-it-off.
I really like the neckline here, and it’s much more functional than you might think given the unpredictable weather this time of year.
Again, the finishing touches are on point and the accessories pull everything together – the hat, bag, necklace, belt, bracelet socks…
3. Classics with a Twist
Keino has a knack for taking old-school menswear staples (like a double-breasted waistcoat, herringbone topcoat and classic fedora) and combining them in a way that is very modern and edgy.
The little touches (like the zipper on the hem of the jeans, the pocket watch, the tie pin, the off-center grosgrain belt) give his look personality and make it his own.
The take-away message here is that with the right confidence and swagger, you can pull-off just about anything. Here Keino is wearing a watch and a pocket watch, and I’ve even seen him wear suspenders with a belt. You can’t call him on it, though, because he owns the look (not that I would recommend either of those combos – some stunts are best left to the pros).
Thanks for reading and special thanks to Keino for participating!
Yours in style,
